Program description

The city of Iguazu is one of the most important tourist attractions in Argentina. It is full of hotels and other services of the highest quality, but at the same time it is a city with a high amount of poverty and a lack of access to education.

Although it is a place full of jobs, the local people do not have the qualifications necessary to work in the tourist sector.
They can only just get jobs as cleaners. They do not know how to use computers or speak any foreign languages and this makes it very difficult to get other jobs.

A community center run by young people with the addition of volunteers help is trying to reverse the situation. It provides computer and English classes and academic support.

Volunteers tasks

The aim of this organization is to receive volunteers who can help with the daily tasks of the community center:
  • Basic computer classes for children, adolescents and adults.
  • English classes for children and adolescents.
  • Academic after-school support.
  • Preparing and serving the children’s tea.

My experience taught me a lot about myself and my ability to overcome barriers such as language and still be successful in engaging the kids in many activities, and helping share a sense of hope with them.

Availability

The community center is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. The volunteer can agree their timetable with the project coordinator.

Local coordination

Carlos is not only the founder of the community center but the center is in part of his house that he gave to the community. He does all this work so that the children and young people that attend the community can have a better future.

Key information

The project is a unique opportunity to be part of a cultural exchange where you can get to know the traditions of 3 countries that share borders creating a totally individual culture (Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina).Volunteers who chose to get to know and help with this project will have a real travel experience with meaning, responsibility and solidarity.

Location and first day

The city of Puerto Iguazu is in the northeast of Argentina. It is a tropical part of the country with a lot of jungle vegetation and wildlife. The city is very small and the main activities revolve around the waterfalls. The community center is 10 blocks away from the center of the city.On your first day you will meet all the people who help in the center, and see the tasks that they carry out. Everyone will want to meet you, the new volunteer! They will all want to know your name, where you live as they are always so excited that someone from another country is interested in getting to know them and helping them.
