Program description

La Quiaca is a town that borders Bolivia. The inhabitants are mainly from Indian origin, they live in a poor region and are often marginalized and lack work opportunities or proper schooling.
In the town there is a community center that is indispensable because of the social interaction, education and food that provides to the community.

The community center has all kinds of activities: recreational art and music workshops, after-school educational support and social gatherings for children and adolescents. There is also a kitchen that gives food daily to many people in the town.
The community center welcomes everyone, irrelevant of age, and it is a place of integration for the whole community, as the inhabitants of the town can otherwise feel lonely and separated.

Volunteers tasks

The purpose of the project is to receive volunteers that can help with the everyday tasks of the community center: helping in the kitchen to prepare lunch, spending time with the elderly members of the community, playing with the children or helping the young people with their after-school educational activities.

Michael - USA

I liked living with a family in La Quiaca and really getting to know the family and the community there. I got to practice my Spanish much and it has gotten much better. I also felt that I had accomplished much there that I had thought and helped my English students. As well as feeling a part at the family there.

Availability

The community center is open from Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm. The volunteer can arrange their hours with the project coordinators.

Local coordination

Anita and Antonio are a missionary couple who after several trips around Latin America, decided to live in Jujuy. The both look after the volunteers: letting them stay in the guest room of their house and guiding the volunteers through the development of the tasks they choose to do.

Key information

This project is a unique opportunity to be part of a cultural exchange program where you can get to know a culture rich in indigenous traditions. Those who decide to get to know and help out with this project, will have a real travel experience full of meaning and responsibility.

Location and first day

La Quiaca is 3,442 metres above sea level and it is the northeast point of Argentina. It is famous because it is located in the arid lands of the Puna plateau, full of beautiful scenery and a deep silence.Your first day will be spent getting to know all the people who help in the community center and seeing the tasks that they carry out. Everyone will want to meet you, the new volunteer, and know your name and where you are from. The people from the community center are always so excited to know that people from other countries are interested in getting to know them and helping them.
