Program description

Argentina has a number of programs dedicated to promoting various forms of economic sustainability in the countryside, from rural tourism to experimental farming.

In the outskirts of Buenos Aires, a farm is part of this program and has an experimental farm of American Ostriches and a vegetable garden.

It also has a small farmhouse that is being rebuilt in an ecological and environmentally friendly way. The farmhouse is going to be a fair trade market where people from the neighbourhood can bring their goods to be sold.

The awareness of these “sensible productions” is developing through the visits of tourists who travel around the areas and learn about sustainability and fair trade practices.

Volunteers tasks

  • Help plant, water and clean the organic garden.
  • Help in the ecological construction of the farm house that will be the “Fair Trade Market”.
  • Help implement recycling methods and reusing materials.
  • Learn about environmental responsibility and implement organic initiatives. New ideas and a desire to build an ecological work are welcome!

I found the organization very well presented, organized and detailed. Gave me the opportunity to see some of the NGO work happening in the poor areas of the BA province.

Local coordination

Luis grew up on this farm and has spent years planting and harvesting ornamental flowers. In recent years, using techniques similar to those already known, he started to develop the horticulture. Luis uses the American ostrich farm as a means of support but the real support of this venture is curiosity and observation, they are aiming to improve the possibilities of the community. There is also Andrea, who is responsible for promoting the farm and organizing tourist visits. Andrea strives to promote this way of sensible living and looks for resources to continue it. She also collaborates with the coordination of volunteers.

Key information

Organic farms are based on respect for nature, the use of renewable energies and economic and food sustainability. This model provides benefits for the local community and for the visitors who can live the experience. In turn, the farm contributes greatly to the conservation of the cultural diversity and biodiversity. Their plan is based on Fair Trade principles. The virtuous circle of sustainable benefits is based on creative projects that encourage the entire community to rediscover their best values, their identity and their culture and develop their potential. It makes them into the protagonists of the cultural model that they show visitors and allowing them in turn to develop not only the community but also themselves.

Location and first day

The farm is located in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, in an area called Florencio Varela. It is 2 hours by bus from the centre of Buenos Aires. However, the volunteer will spend Monday to Friday living on the farm.Your first day will be dedicated to settling in, meeting Andrea and Luis and his family, the whole farm and the activities that take place there.
