Program description

Children who attend the community center have enormous struggles at school and do not receive as much attention as they wish to have from their parents or relatives. Guardians may deal with illiteracy, full time jobs, and teachers at school who cannot provide individual attention; therefore, they find school homework not only difficult but also frustrating.  With this program we aim at providing help according to their age and specific needs.

Volunteers tasks

Volunteers will be expected to:

  • Help primary and high school students with their homework, e.g. in mathematics, English, biology, physics, history, etc.
  • Occasionally teach children just starting school how to read and write
  • Develop new exercises e.g. for teaching English
  • Chat with the students about their problems
  • Occasionally play games with the kids
  • Serve as role models and mentors for the students
While it is true that sometimes there are too many children in one class, the coordinator will assign them to an specific volunteer so they can work in order. In this way, the volunteer can focus on 1 or 2 kids and provide the help and attention they need.

I thoroughly enjoyed working for Voluntario Global. They were very friendly and helpful. Berta and Johan have been incredible and of great support throughout my time here. The program could be better if you are not alone. If you have another volunteer for company it helps. With “apoyo escolar” it is important to remember that it is not just about their education and be ready to give them attention and play with them. With the adults and adolescents classes I prepared work but also ask them what they want to learn, it may save time on preparing unnecessary things.

Local coordination

Berta is the coordinator of this program. She’s in her first year at the teacher’s training college as she wants to be a primary school teacher. Berta coordinates all the activities where the volunteers will work and assign the children according to their needs. It is essential that the volunteer arrives on time (about 30 minutes before the class starts) so they can plan the activities of the day together with the coordinator and also to talk to her if they have questions.

Key information

It is very important to create strong bonds with these children, in this way you will gain their trust and respect. Keep in mind that above all, you will need to provide social assistance as most of these kids struggle at school because of attention problems. You can also help with playing games or just talking to them. It is a great opportunity to improve your Spanish and learn about our culture.

Location and first day

The community center is the neighborhood of La Boca.   The center provides educational activities and workshops, but it also has trade schools, cooperatives, micro enterprises, and the kitchen that receives more than 100 people every day to eat.On your first day you will be shown round the whole community center. You will get to know each area and worker – there are over 80 people who work in the center.
